Up Yours Tobacco, I Quit

About 30 years ago, give or take a few months, I started turning to tobacco as an anger management tool.  From the caring advice of a friend no less!  Since it made me a bit dizzy & light headed at the time, it seemed to do the trick.  I was no longer angry so much as simply trying to think clearly while keeping my balance.  Something else that started about that same time, and that I had never really thought about until today, was that I started having mornings where I would suddenly become quite nauseous.  My Dad would say it was all in my head and tell me to get my butt to school, which added to my stress levels a bit more, so I would pack up, head out walking and light up on my way to school.  You know, trying to be a good kid and all that.
This continued for a few years before I finally got tired of it and headed out to a doctor.  Yes, I am that stubborn some times and going to see any medical professional is usually one of those times for me.  Well the Dr. agreed that we should at least run some tests (what a shock) and I was sent off to find another building across town.  Long story short, there didn't appear to be anything they could see so here's a prescription for a good strong antacid.  Ya, thanks doc!  So nothing really changed and I went on smoking about a pack a day for years, occasionally getting randomly sick and having folks tell me I was too stressed or that I must be developing an ulcer.  Sigh.
Over those years I paid anywhere from $2.83 (I still remember buying my fist pack quite vividly) to these last packs that cost about $16 each.  Let's do some math for a moment.  16 dollars / 25 smoke = $0.64 for each cigarette!  That's outrageously foolish when it comes to good finances.  Smoking tobacco is a bigger line on my budget than entertainment, ranks right up there with my power bill!  It's sure going to be nice to put that cash to better uses elsewhere, for example 3 months of not smoking would be a good start on what I need to build my greenhouse!  Plus, assuming I'm correct about all this, no longer having to worry about random sicks days is bound to improve my overall quality of life ...
So what's the point of all this you ask?  The point, my dear reader, is that I'm done with tobacco.  As I look back and think about it now, the whole time I've been smoking it was really spending cash to avoid currently dealing with something that would probably end up making me sick if I didn't just get it dealt with.  As a kid I can right off ignoring the foolishness but now that I have kids of my own it's become time to realize/admit that I simply no better.  They say that quitting smoking can be quite difficult, personally I've tried several time previously, but if you have a solid reason that you believe in that will make a big difference.  Well, this is a reason I can believe in!

They Say Blogs Make Money!

28-02-2016

So lately on FaceBook there has been this post running around, at least in my group of folks anyway, about how easy it is to make over 10K per month from home writing blogs.  Now I have got to admit that I do make a few cents in some months from the blogs I have done but 10K … not there yet!
It’s kind of a misleading statement isn’t it?  Then again, I guess most things on the internet are these days.  How tragic is that?  We have this fantastic way to communicate around the world and share our collective knowledge but we share cat videos, hate speeches and prank style bad ideas.  Why is that I wonder?
Back to these blogs making a boat load of money every month, what blogs are they talking about I wonder?  I’m betting it’s those cat pictures again!  Which says to me that, on one level at least, humanity isn’t completely lost forever.  Cat pic’s suggest that people are looking for something cute or funny to improve their day and share, like I said above, to improve the day for others.  That speaks to kindness, I like that.
What about what folks are looking at the rest of the time.  All that hate in religion, politics, policing, the military, GMOs … the list seems almost endless.  Sadly, those are probably the blogs making all that money.  Seven million ads along the sides, pop-ups everywhere delaying the loading of the article you went for in the first place, an article that half the time isn’t even worth the time spent waiting for the page to load and in the end what do you find if not fear & hate?  Tragic.
This blog was started as a place for me to vent my frustrations into the world but I think we will be looking at a shift in the near future.  Sure, I will still sit down and type for a bit if I happen to feel the need to word rage but mostly I think it would be nice to explore some positive thoughts on how we can all work to make this world a better place.  I guess that means this will never be one of those ‘super easy 10K/mo from home blogs’ but that’s okay.  If I feel better and you feel better, that’s all I really care about anyway.

Much love everybody, JT Bear.

8 Reasons to Start Gardening NOW!

1) Cheap - Here in my town we have about half a dozen or so little dollar stores and most of them sell seeds packages at a price of either 3 or 4 for a dollar.  It usually doesn’t take a determined person long to earn, find, borrow or even beg to come up with a single dollar.  While I’ll be the first to admit that these aren’t the best quality of seeds, or the best selection, they will still sprout and grow for you most of the time.  The displays in our stores seem to generally include things such as carrots, lettuces, peas, beans, radishes and the like while also having a decent selection of easy to grow flowers to attract those pollinators with.
Let’s say you grab a package of carrot seeds, peas and a lettuce variety for your dollar spent.  Carrots are super easy to grow and have tiny seeds, odds are you will get over 100 seeds for the 33 cents that package cost.  Even if only 1/3 of them grow you are still looking at 33+ carrots for about a penny each.  When was the last time you saw carrots for sale at a penny per?  Odds are the answer is never.  The math on the peas works out even better since a single pea seed can grow into a plant that produces dozens, if not hundreds, of pods with new seeds in them.  Save a couple & eat the rest.  Peas are now free forever!  How’s that for cheap?!?

2) Saves Massive Cash - If you paid any attention at all to the first point then you can probably see how this works already.  Around here we can usually buy a 5 pound bag of carrots for about $3, same price as 9 packs of seeds, and it will have between 15 and 20 decent looking carrots in it.  Even with the low success rate from above that same number of carrots would have only cost about 20 cents.  Let’s see, if I grow 20 carrots at a penny each instead of buy them for $3 I could save … $2.80!
Lettuce is another great example for this since those dollar store packages usually have over one hundred seeds in them as well.  For the sake of argument, we’ll assume that same 1/3 success rate as the carrots for this and that you have similar market prices as I do.  I would pay about $1 per head of lettuce if I were to purchase it at the market so the savings there is basically a dollar per plant grown.  So in essence a 33 cent pack of lettuce seeds could save a gardener over $33!  Okay, that’s impressive if you think about it …
If you really want to have some fun saving money through gardening you should try growing the most expensive things that you would buy from the produce department and then put the money you would have spent on it into a jar.  Just harvest a beautiful fresh bell pepper?  89 cents in the jar please!  You will be shocked at how fast that adds up towards next years garden.  It’s quite spectacular to see happening.  Personally I grow a lot of hot peppers, herbs and tomatoes to keep those savings up and the family healthy!

3) Sound Investment - For most of us living on this planet the idea of investing is something of a sick joke.  For example, my bank wants $500 just to get started and the returns don’t really seem that great to me.  I’m going to keep this one short and to the point.  If you find an investment that pays out better than lettuce, and is legal, put everything you’ve got into it and remember who gave you that advice … (*cough*)  Where else can you turn a penny into a dollar?  ‘Nuff said.

4) Food Security - These days there seems to be a lot of concern over something called food security.  Is it just me or does that make anybody else picture a little uniformed guard in the fridge asking for your ID?  Anyway, that concern is not necessarily a bad thing since odds are that’s what brought you to one of my videos or blog posts in the first place.  The funny thing about that is that food is pretty easy to grow almost anywhere so there really is no reason for a gardener to worry about going hungry for long.  Many plants can be eaten as sprouts when they are only a few days old and have plenty of nutrients to keep a person healthy while they wait for other plants to grow.  With a little creativity, the ability to garden can even be used to help secure meats for the family.  After all, who hasn’t heard stories for some garden raiding deer or rabbit?  Both pretty tasty in my books!

5) Healthy Food - For those who are concerned with the quality of the food they eat, gardening is almost the only affordable option.  Our local markets charge at least twice as much for any produce marked as organic.  I saw in one store they had ‘Organic’ cucumbers selling for $4 each.  EACH!  I bought a cucumber plant for the aquaponic system and it’s already got 3 fruit starting on it and since it’s in the AP garden I feel it will harvest as far better than so called organic produce at the market.  Gardening is simple to get involved in and let’s face it, as long as you have seeds you’ll have access to top quality & healthy foods.

6) Reduced Global Footprint - Granted, it is beyond awesome that we can grow food and transport it anywhere in the world and I don’t intend to suggest otherwise.  However, the habit of doing so has had some serious and negative effects on our world.  Driving to the market to buy packaged and out of season fruit is very convenient and has become quite normal in many places.  Skipping over the packaged & processed stuff, let’s just look at what is needed to get that produce to market in the first place.
The farmer has to take on a HUGE debt load for the land, seeds,  and equipment that are needed plus a small fortune in operating costs for the fuel to power everything along the way.  Those tractors to plow, plant and harvest all need gas of some sort don’t they?  Then of course so do the large trucks that take it all to market, but not to your market yet.  First it goes to huge warehouses to be sorted before getting shipped to the companies buying it all for resale.  Then it goes to other warehouses to get sorted again before getting shipped some more before it finally gets to your market.  Where it gets sorted again before you even have a chance to go through and ‘pick out the best ones’ like we all do.  Excellent, now wasn’t that easier than just growing it yourself?  Not really …  Ever wonder why food prices are so high?  There’s your answer!

7) Takes Practice - As I’ve said many times, gardening is easy to get started with but with that being said, it does take some practice.  If I had a dollar for every plant I have brutally killed one way or another along my learning journey, we’d be living on a pretty big farm right now!
There are times when the plants will get forgotten or simply can’t be cared for or the weather does something that kills them all or, or, or … the list goes on for a long time.  These things happen and you learn from them.  No two gardens are ever exactly the same so you have to learn what will work in your garden specifically.  Folks like me can offer tips and tricks and advice but results will vary.  Stubborn practice is the only sure fire way to become a better gardener, there is no short cut.

8) Takes Time - Great gardens do not happen overnight.  Sorry if you were hoping otherwise, it just doesn’t work that way.  On the surface gardening is simple.  Plant a seed, give it some care and just watch it grow until harvest time.  Pretty easy right?  At a deeper level there is a lot more that goes into it, as you will learn with practice.  Good soil can be found in many places but truly great soil is built over years by loving gardeners trying to proved the best possible environment for their plants.  It’s a beautiful and habit forming process that I hope you get started in soon.  Give it a try for a few years and I’m sure you’ll know what I mean!

Now go out there and get growing!

I Think My World’s Gone Crazy

There’s something going on today in the world that just doesn’t make any sense at all.  Doesn’t matter how you look at it, the situation is just illogical.  What’s happening, how it came to be and where it seems to be going.  Stupid, illogical, unreasonable, antisocial and yet a total reality.  What am I going on about I hear you ask?  Life my dear friends, life.
A perfect example of what I’m talking about today would be the idea of normal.  Normal, eww, may I never again be labelled with such a destructive and negative word as normal.  If you ask me, and you kinda did but clicking to read this blog, normal is a sociopathic nightmare in which young girls torture and abuse themselves, and each other, because of bodies they are repeatedly told are less than normal or perfect.  To fat, too skinny, too tall, too blond, too short, wrong nose, hate my chin and even more.  The list here is disturbingly long, just ask any teenage girl or pick up a fashion magazine.
As for guys, manly men, grr n stuff?  The list is just as long but nobody ever really talks about it because so called normal men don’t share their feelings.  Unless they're plastered, in which case … I love you man, no really, I love you man …  Drunk guys are funny to watch when they start to open up.  Guys are bombarded with images of men they could never look like, have huge expectations placed on them by society and in many places the strain is just too much for them to bear and suicide seems like the only escape.  And that’s normal.
Normal people tend to have a religion that they follow and if you don’t follow one then normally you get called an atheist.  Normally these religions will say that you, as a believer, are better than those around you who are not believers or worse yet … believe something else!  In some parts of our screwed up world the normal religion says that if you are different then you should be killed for that.  Which makes that perfectly normal in that area.  Since the majority of those people believe it to be that way, it becomes normal.
Which brings me back to my point, normal is a sick & twisted, septic, sociopathic nightmare and I would much rather just be the real me regardless of what I may be called for it.  Do what I think I should do, not what does some book or magazine or ad or neighbor or blog or anybody else thinks I should do.  Do what I feel & think is right and forget what the sheeple are doing.  This is a good plan and has worked well for me, for the most part.  I whole heartedly recommend giving it a try but I warn you that it’s not easy and you may find that most of your life has been lived in a sick sort of autopilot that you would never have picked given the chance.
How do you do it?  Start watching what you do & say for those so called automatic reactions.  Once you recognize that you have a certain pattern of behavior, and we ALL do I assure you, ask yourself if you feel & think that is a proper way to behave in a sane and civilized society.  If the answer is yes then by all means, carry on!  If the answer is no then maybe you should find a different way to look at the situation.
One of the worst things I have seen, time & time again, is good people suffering from trying to be normal.  Come on people, we’re better than that!  Just be real!

Much love, JT Bear

I Have A Dream

I have a dream of property.  Land counted in acres, with a mature forest where I can walk along the trails and feel at one with the earth.  Forest were the birds chirp away in the tree tops, the deer wander in safety and the assorted woodland critters feel free to display themselves while going about their little lives.  With a creek ,or steam, weaving and wandering along the property providing water for the forest and farm.  Some land upon the property that is well suited to growing greenhouse crops and a fair bit that is well suited to growing assorted trees and shrubs for long term provisions.  Somewhere safe to keep some bees and raise chickens, sheep, rabbits and a few pigs.
I dream of building a home for my family on this land, near the creek and within sight of the forest.  Somewhere that my children and grandchildren will always know is there for them.  Somewhere that will always be safe, almost a sanctuary away from the world but ready to be a part of it at the same time.  A place where there is enough space to grow more food than my family can eat, which will provide the chance to share with others who maybe don’t have quite enough.
I dream of creating a place where aquaponics can be shared with the world.  Enough space to set up a wide range of different gardens and truly test what each is capable of producing.  Somewhere that new theories can be tested and the results shared with the aquaponic community, a place where new gardeners can visit and be comfortable to build an aquaponic garden when they return home.  Somewhere that ideas on how to provide for small groups and communities can be explored before they wander off to do some good in the world.
I want to run a successful business, based on growing aquaponic crops using koi and other high value fish to provide the required nutrients.  The primary crop will be green tea with it’s sales being conducted mostly online.  The primary source of income will be the koi breeding and auction house, both online & in house.  The secondary source of income will be the cabin rental or bed & breakfast on the land.  It would be wonderful to host aquaponic ‘campouts’ where ordinary people can meet and share ideas about aquaponic gardening.  There may be a small fee to join these, but it would be quite small & per person.
I long to sleep at night in a home I have built, on land that can never be taken from my family.  I yearn to awake in the morning refreshed and ready to work hard on the may things it takes to run this type of property.  I know that I have the required skills and abilities.  If I should need new information, I know that someone will be able to share it with me and help me learn for myself.  I wish to have in my possession all the tools required to make this happen, money is just a tool.
I look forward to all of the videos I can share about building and developing the land.  I look forward to meeting many fine people who are also interested in building the global aquaponic community.  I look forward to sharing my successes with others and helping them to reach their own goals.  I look forward to a day when we all have all that we need to be comfortable and happy.
I have a dream of property.  Property where I can learn to make all my dreams come true.

A Story of Wolves, Lions & Lambs (or, the story of mankind)

Once upon a time there lived a little boy.  He was not unlike any other child except perhaps in that this little boy would think very big thoughts for such a little boy.  Sometimes, when he had thought something that really needed sharing … he would tell the people around him what he had learned.  Soon this little boy learned another lesson that was much harder to understand.  People, no matter how smart or trusted they may be, don’t want to hear the truth from a little boy.  In time that little boy started keeping those lessons learned to himself but he kept on thinking.  I wonder sometimes what goes on in his little head, let’s take a look shall we?

The story of mankind is not too unlike a story of three different beasts all wearing the same outward appearance.  For the most part, all members of mankind look pretty much the same.  They look like a creative & intelligent species, for the most part.  Yet upon closer inspection most of mankind act like simple beasts, without any real understand of why they do the things they do.  Yes, most of mankind live the life of lambs, and for them it is true when they say that ignorance is bliss.  When you don’t know about things, or don’t understand them, then they don’t worry you too much do they?  It doesn't have any effect on day to day life.  That must be nice …
Not all of mankind are lambs however and there are two other, more powerful, beasts walking in the flock.  Unnoticed by most of the lambs they live with, day in & day out.  There are wolves and lions both out there.  Strong powerful beasts who walk freely amongst the lambs.  Lambs who are so blissfully unaware these dangers even exist.  What makes the difference?  How can you tell?
To put it simply, one beast makes it's meal by taking from the weak while the other beast shares it’s meal to nourish the weak.  One takes from the flock & one protects it.  A great man once said ‘In life, we are kings or pawns.’  I disagree.  I think that we are wolves, lions or lambs.  The choice is ours with every moment of every day.  I am not a lamb nor am I a wolf.  I guess then, that I must be a lion.  I will do my best to protect the lambs from the wolves & quietly encourage the lambs to become lions themselves.

Well, isn't that an interesting little thought!  Isn't it sad when we are afraid to speak the truth because we fear being punished for it?  Still, it makes me wonder?  What am I … am I a lamb, a lion or a wolf?  What will you be?

The Bloody YOLO Mentality!

Few things get me going like hearing some idiot has used YOLO as a reason to do something totally stupid.  No, I don’t mean foolish or silly.  I mean STUPID.

You Only Live Once, that’s what that is all about right?  So based on that you should completely disregard how your actions and words effect other people around you, forget about saving for the future, not care about anything really because none of it matters?  You only live once, and then you die right?  So who cares…

To me this way of thinking is not only self destructive but it is in fact destroying our entire planet.  Hear me out on this one.  For thousands of years, much of the world has maintained the "life followed by death followed by ‘eternal’ judgement" theory.  As though existence were a straight line with a clearly defined beginning, middle and end.  This may, or may not, be the case … no one REALLY knows for sure but everyone has their theories.  With that theory in mind it becomes easy to think of the world as something that we can use and abuse as we please with no ‘real’ consequences for our actions.  After all , you only live once right?

Here’s the thing that causes me to stumble there.  Doesn't science say that energy cannot be destroyed but instead simply, changes forms?  What if, and I’m not saying this is the case either just sort of a… what if, everyone grew up believing that after we die we do reincarnate?  Would that change how we treat the planet and all the creatures on it?  It seems to me that if we all thought we would end up coming back here we might just care a little bit more about where the world is heading.  Dealing with issues that will only be a problem in 150 years would become almost as important as dealing with things that are a problem right now.  Would those big companies that are slowly killing us all still do so if they believed that one day that will be their drinking water, or that in the next life they would be forced to breathe the harsh stale air of a dying earth?  I’m thinking, probably not.

If you believe that the problems of the world are your problems, and how you treat other living creatures does matter in the long run then how could a person of any real intellect make the decisions these ’powers that be’ seem to make so freely?  In this writers opinion, the wars we are fighting, the air we are polluting, the wildlife we are killing freely … none of these things would be happening an a society where we all realized that ultimately we are all one in the same.

Just saying ...

The Amazing Power of the Penny vs. The Billion Dollar Corporations

When you think about it, a penny doesn’t really seem like much. One hundredth of a dollar, and it’s not like a dollar will buy much these days. In fact, I recently watched a report which stated that our dollar now will purchase about as much as four cents did in 1913. Four cents. Now, there is a huge ugly reason for that but that’s the topic of a different rant.

There are over seven billion of us on the planet today and that number is growing fast. Each and every one of us is, in some way, destined to come into contact with the Billion Dollar Corporations sooner or later. Can’t be helped. Most of us feed them with energy money if nothing else. Gas for the car, gas for the heat, electricity to power everything in our lives. These bills add up to a huge portion of our spending in ways most people don’t even think about. When you buy something at the store it’s price probably includes the cost of transport … more paying for power, but at least this time it’s only pennies. Right?

A couple of pennies here, a couple of pennies there … by the time you finish shopping you’ve probably spent at least an extra dollar in those little pennies but hey, they’re just pennies right? Those little pennies really do add up quite quickly. Let’s look at a large city, take New York City for an example. The last time I looked the population of New York was around 8.3 million people. If each of them only gives the Billion Dollar Corporations one single penny, the corporation has gained an easy $83,000 per day. If they are all good little shoppers and spend a full dollar in those little pennies for power the corporation has gained over 8 million dollars. From pennies collected in a single city they are up quite a nice chunk of cash.

The problem with getting that much money for no real effort is that you get quite used to it and spend accordingly. Let’s switch things up a bit shall we? Let’s say that each New Yorker were to keep just one penny back every day. One single cent. Eighty-three thousand dollars a day. After a year that would work out to over thirty million dollars they didn’t get to waste. Imagine if everyone was able to keep back that full dollar a day in pennies! That’s over $3,000,000,000 they don’t get to play with from just one city.

Let’s go back to the amazing penny but look at it from a global point of view, because let’s face it … we are all feeding the same beast once you look far enough up the financial food chain. So according to the world population clock there are over 7.1 billion of us here. If we could each just keep back one little penny per day at the end of the year we would have starved the Billion Dollar Corporation of $25,915,000,000. Almost 26 billion dollar they don’t get per year. From one amazing little penny. Kind of shocking, isn’t it?

So then, the question becomes how can we save those pennies and start to fight back where it will really hurt them. The answers are everywhere and we’ve all heard them before but not enough people are listening, so those that are don’t feel like anything is working. It is my friends and more people every day are waking up to the fact that something HAS TO CHANGE and soon. We’ve all heard that we should drive less and walk more to save money, and these days that’s way more than pennies per trip. Get more energy efficient items for around the home such as washers, driers, fridges and freezers. While your at it, check the insulation of your home. Odds are it could be improved upon saving you more than pennies every day there too!

Perhaps one of the best ways to pinch a few of those pennies is to start generating your own electricity. Much safer than trying to make your own gasoline I think. Two obvious options here would be solar and wind. Solar panels are becoming more efficient every day and they will produce electricity for a LONG time but they are really overpriced compared to the cost of that same amount of power from a plug in the wall. Most of the large solar panels that I’ve seen available to the general public would take over a decade of useable electrical production before they had recovered their purchase price. In my thinking that’s just the big companies trying to steer the people away from something that is a treat to their profits in the long term.

Wind power is a little more cost effective but there are associated dangers to wildlife, such as bird deaths, that tend to get people into an uproar so most people just avoid the subject to avoid the confrontation. As I look on eBay right now you can purchase one of several 500 watt wind turbines starting as low as $300. Okay, time for some math. Working at it’s peak off 500 watts for an average of 2 hours a day seems like a nice minimal starting point. So that boils down to 1Kw produced every day or 365Kw per year. Since I don’t know what you pay for power I’ll use the local price for my calculations, which is about ten cents per kilowatt. So easy math says that wind turbine is paying you back at a rate of a dime a day or a whopping $36.50 per year. Okay so, $300 to purchase divided by $36.50 per year means it will take about 8.2 years to pay for itself. Still faster than a solar panel, but let’s face it if you don’t live somewhere with a steady wind solar is pretty much your only option for green power supply. What if you do live somewhere windy enough to keep your turbine spinning long enough to produce 5Kw per day? Then it would have paid you back in only 600 days or about 1.6 years. After it’s paid for itself that electricity is costing you nothing and even more important that money is no longer being spent to feed the Billion Dollar Corporations. The really good bit about it all is that once you do invest in something that can generate some electricity you can start keeping pennies back right away. It may not seem like much when it’s just you and me, but let’s think about those New York numbers again. 8.3 million people, each keeping 50 cents per day from the Billion Dollar Corporations, over the course of a year would be … around 1.5 billion dollars per year.

The real problem is, most of these things require a large payment up front which, let’s face it, most of us can’t or won’t pay. What a surprise! Big business wins again … so again we must ask ourselves, is there ANYTHING we can do right now that doesn’t cost a fortune and take years to pay us back? The answer is yes. Yes there is!

One of the easiest and most affordable things that you can do to start starving the Billion Dollar Corporations is to start feeding yourself. Start a garden and grow ANYTHING you can eat. Seeds cost pennies each and grow foods that cost you dollars, that sounds like a good trade to me! Everything you eat from you garden takes a bite out of their income. That is why hobby level gardening is under attack in some parts of the world. The last thing the Billion Dollar Corporations want is for people to remember how to grow their own fruits and vegetables. During war times it was considered a citizens duty to have a Victory garden and produce some of their own food at home, before then it was just how we lived.

Anyone can garden at a hobby level. I don’t care where you live or how little space you think you have. Anyone can do it. There are so many videos available these days on YouTube showing different systems for different situations there really is no excuse to not at least try. Those pennies you save will begin to have an immediate impact on the wallets of the elite as well as your own. If you grow enough of your own fruits and vegetables to save $300 you can buy yourself a wind turbine! We can take slow and steady steps to save ourselves from these Billion Dollar Corporation and one by one, they will add up to something HUGE that cannot simply be brushed aside or ignored any longer. Are you ready to become a part of the one cent revolution?
